Niron, MAHLE and AEM advance rare earth free motor technology across broad front

Niron Magnetics signed a supply agreement mid-July with ASPINA, the motor brand of Japanese manufacturer Shinano Kenshi, to build motor platforms around Niron’s iron nitride magnets. Development programs cover brushless DC motors, hybrid stepper motors and centrifugal fan blowers for automotive, space and automation markets. Minneapolis-based Niron, backed by GM and by Stellantis, which is already co-developing traction motors on the chemistry, is building the world’s first commercial iron nitride plant at Sartell, Minnesota, targeting 1,500 tpa in 2027 on an iron-and-nitrogen feedstock chain that bypasses Chinese supply entirely.
