54.9 GWh deployed onto roads globally in July 2023

Oct. 11, 2023

Top three cell suppliers captured 64% of the market

In July 2023, a hefty 54.9 GWh of battery capacity was deployed onto roads globally in all newly sold passenger EVs (BEVs, PHEVs and HEVs) combined, a 46% increase over July 2022 but 17% less than the all-time record set in December of last year.

CATL led the charge with a 29% share of all capacity deployed onto roads in July 2023, surging ahead of BYD (18% market share) and LG Energy Solution (16% market share). Collectively, the top three captured 64% of the market in July.

The Tesla Model Y and Model 3 collectively drove 16% of CATL’s cell capacity onto roads in July 2023 and 20% of LG Energy Solution’s, a testament to the kingmaker’s undeniable influence on the EV battery supply chain, as we examined in past insights.

348.3 GWh deployed year-to-date, more than double 2020 total

Through the first seven months of 2023, a whopping 348.3 GWh of battery capacity was deployed onto roads globally in all newly sold passenger xEVs (BEVs, PHEVs and HEVs) combined, more than double the 134.8 GWh deployed globally through the full calendar year 2020.

In the second quarter of 2023 alone, a record 163.7 GWh was deployed, which if repeated in Q3 and Q4, would push the total to over 600 GWh for the 2023 calendar year, more than double the 286.5 GWh deployed in 2021.

Adamas take

The fourth quarter is historically the strongest period of the calendar year and, with strong momentum coming out of Q3, Adamas expects global deployment to exceed 200 GWh in Q4 2023 for the first time ever, pushing the annual total to over 700 GWh, >45% higher than the year prior.
