A Record 31.7 GWh Deployed Onto Roads Globally in September 2021
Battery Capacity Deployment Up 105% Year-over-Year
In September 2021, a staggering 31.7 GWh of battery capacity was deployed onto roads globally in all newly sold passenger xEVs (BEVs, PHEVs and HEVs) combined, 105% increase over September 2020 and a 19% increase over the previous record set in July of this year.
CATL led the charge with a 35% share of all capacity deployed onto roads in September 2021, leaping ahead of LG Energy Solution (19% market share) and Panasonic (15% market share). Collectively, the top three captured 69% of the market in September.
The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y collectively drove 37% of CATL’s cell capacity onto roads in September 2021 and 25% of LG Energy Solution’s, a testament to the kingmaker’s undeniable influence on the EV battery supply chain, as we examined earlier this year.
184.1 GWh Deployed Onto Roads Year-to-Date, Nearly Double 2019 Full Year Deployment
Through the first nine months of 2021, a shocking 184.1 GWh of battery capacity was deployed onto roads globally in all newly sold passenger xEVs (BEVs, PHEVs and HEVs) combined, nearly double the 96.8 GWh deployed globally through the full calendar year 2019.
In the third quarter of 2021 alone, a hefty 75.2 GWh was deployed, which if repeated in Q4, would push the total to 260 GWh for the 2021 calendar year, roughly double the 134.4 GWh deployed in 2020.
That said, the fourth quarter is historically the strongest period of the year and, with a surge of momentum coming out of Q3, Adamas expects global deployment to exceed 100 GWh in Q4 2021 for the first time ever, pushing the annual total close to 300 GWh, more than double that of the 2020 calendar year.
