Top 10 automakers by manganese deployed

Model Y remains the master of manganese

In 2023, a total of 71,996 tonnes of manganese (225,000 tonnes of MnSO4 equivalent –“MSE”) were deployed onto roads globally in the batteries of all newly sold passenger EVs combined, 27% more than in 2022, according to Adamas Intelligence data.

The Tesla Model Y led the pack in 2023 by a large margin with 2,686 tonnes of manganese (8,400 tonnes MSE) deployed onto roads worldwide, up an eye-catching 76% over the year prior.

The GAC Aion Y crossover claimed second place in 2023 with 2,266 tonnes (7,100 tonnes MSE) deployed, up 116% year over year.

The Aion Y’s stablemate, the GAC Aion S Plus sedan, came in third place in 2023 with 1,902 tonnes of manganese (5,950 tonnes MSE) deployed, up a hefty 91% over the same period the year prior.

In fourth place, the drivers of new Zeekr 001s steered 1,859 tonnes of manganese (5,800 tonnes MSE) onto roads globally in 2023, up 5% over the year prior for the luxury shooting-brake style SUV.

The Audi Q4 e-tron captured fifth place with 1,256 tonnes of manganese (3,900 tonnes MSE) deployed in 2023, up 106% over the same quarter the year prior.

Adamas take:

More than half the manganese kilograms deployed onto roads globally last year in EV batteries were contained in NCM 5-series cathodes.

The expanding use of LFP batteries in EVs, coupled with a preference for higher-nickel variants on the NCM side of the market, will continue to put downward pressure on manganese deployment growth until LMFP packs begin to hit the road en masse.
