Top 10 EV producing countries by battery capacity deployed

Made-in-China EVs increase global share to 65% – Mexican EVs double GWh deployment – Germany exports 63% of domestically produced capacity
EVs made in China and sold worldwide in calendar 2024 had a combined battery capacity of 557.8 GWh representing a 36% increase over 2023.
The combined battery capacity hitting roads in made-in-China EVs constitutes 65% of the global total which climbed to a record 864.0 GWh last year according to analysis provided by the Adamas EV Battery Intel Platform. The global total includes the combined battery capacity of all types of EVs, including full electric, plug-in and conventional hybrids sold during 2024.
EVs sold within China in 2024, including small quantities of imports from Germany and the US, added 497.8 GWh total battery capacity to the country’s roads, turning China into an exporter of nearly 60.0 GWh worth of battery capacity. The UK, Australia, Germany, Thailand followed by Brazil were the top five importers of made-in-China EVs on a GWh basis.
The combined battery capacity of EVs manufactured in the US and sold globally in 2024 grew by a modest 7% to 94.0 GWh. US EV battery demand last year was met by imports of 24.4 GWh, mostly from Mexico, South Korea and Germany.
German-made EVs came in third for total battery capacity deployed last year of 83.2 GWh. Year on year growth came in at 10% and 2024’s performance once again showcased the exporting prowess of the country’s automakers.

Just shy of 63% of the total EV battery capacity assembled in the European nation last year were exported and sold, mainly in the UK, US and France.
While Tesla’s Model Y manufactured outside the capital Berlin was the top export, BMW was the standout homegrown electric vehicle maker. BMW, including its Mini brand, expanded in-country production on a GWh basis by 35% in 2024 to 24.4 GWh.
EVs made in South Korea racked up the fourth highest total battery capacity deployed after growing by just 3% last year to 30.0 GWh which equates to a 4% global market share. The Asian nation added just over 10.0 GWh to its EV parc in 2024 after a 15% year on year retreat in battery capacity deployed within its borders.
The likes of the Hyundai Ioniq 5s and Kia EV6s which did not find buyers inside South Korea went mainly to the US after a 43% jump in exports to the country to 9.7 GWh during the year, and Canada where Korean-made EVs contributed 2.6 GWh of the total 16.5 GWh battery capacity deployed there in EVs sold over the course of 2024.
Japan was the fifth largest producing country in terms of total battery capacity deployed globally last year at 18.0 GWh, a 22% advance over 2023. Japan was the the number five supplier of EV battery capacity to the US, with the relatively small contribution on a GWh basis explained by the fact that conventional hybrids, which rarely come fitted with batteries larger than 2 kWh, made up a full 65% of the packs exported to the US and sold in the country last year.
Made-in-Mexico EVs nearly doubled deployment worldwide to 13.0 GWh. Three quarters of the total battery capacity of EVs made in Mexico was deployed in the US, led by the Ford Mustang Mach-E, manufactured north of Mexico City since late 2020 and the Honda Prologue which General Motors makes on behalf of the Japanese automaker at a plant in the northeast of the country.
The remainder of the top 10 turned in a mixed performance with French-made EVs upping battery capacity deployment by 11% and the Czech Republic growing by 1%. The worst performers were Belgium-made EVs which showed a drop of 33% and Spain which recorded a sharp fall in 2024 of 21% in GWh terms.
