Americas now responsible for only 13% of global EV battery graphite deployment
Sales weighted average graphite contained across EV types in the Americas declines as buyers increasingly choose hybrids over full electric vehicles.
Globally, 271.9 kilotonnes of graphite were deployed onto roads in electrified passenger vehicles sold January through April 2025, representing a 35% (or 70.5 kt) increase over the same four months in 2024.
More specifically, 221.8 kt of graphite were deployed onto roads in the batteries of all newly sold battery electric vehicles (BEVs) globally, 57.2 kt more than in 2024 equating to a 35% increase year-over-year.
Deployment in newly sold plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) outpaced overall growth, coming in at 37% year on year. Conventional, minimally electrified hybrid EV deployment of the anode material recorded a more modest 20% expansion compared to last year as the EV sales mix skew away from HEVs, particularly outside North America.
Regional growth patterns are also diverging with a slowdown most noticeable in the Americas. The region was responsible for only 13% of global deployment over the period.
The Americas, saw only 16% growth year on year, pushed down by an accompanying 6% decline to 27.1 kg in the sales weighted average graphite contained across all types of EVs sold. Â
The modest performance of electric vehicle markets in North and South America contrasts with a 41% growth rate observed in the Asia-Pacific region. New EV owners in Asia Pacific drove 173.3 kt of graphite onto the region’s roads, 64% of the global total.
At the same time the battery pack of the average EV sold in the region climbed by 7% to 34.4 kg as BEVs grab market share from PHEVs and HEVs, particularly in China.
Europe saw 30% graphite deployment growth while the Middle East and Africa experienced a 64% surge, albeit from a low base. Nevertheless, the region is starting to make a meaningful contribution to graphite deployment, constituting over 2% of the global total over the first four months of 2025. The Middle East and Africa also boasts the highest sales weighted average graphite contained at 34.7 kg per EV.
