Ultium becomes top EV cell supplier in the Americas

Over the first four months of 2025, 45.0 GWh were deployed onto roads in the Americas in all newly sold passenger BEVs, PHEVs and HEVs combined, 17% more than the same months the year before.

Ultium Cells, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, takes the lead in the region for the first time with 7.6 GWh deployed from January through April this year.

Ultium’s combined battery capacity deployed surged by 262% year over year, just pushing Panasonic to number two.

Ultium manufactures NCMA batteries in Ohio fitted to, among others, the Cadillac Lyriq, the massive GMC Hummer SUV and the Chevrolet Equinox, a mid-market offering introduced last year to great success.

GM also builds the Honda Prologue in Mexico on behalf of the Japanese carmaker and together with the Equinox, the two mid-size SUVs contributed 35% of the battery maker’s capacity deployment in the Americas.

GM is overhauling its battery strategy under a new battery boss, who joined Detroit from Tesla, and is moving to LFP cells for certain future models including the all-new 2025 Bolt, its entry-level hatch.

Panasonic has had a rough start to 2025 with the Japanese firm, a long-time Tesla partner, seeing deployment shrink by 27% to just below 7.6 GWh.

LG Energy Solution secures third position with a combined battery capacity deployment of 6.0 GWh, marking modest year-over-year gains of 9%. LGES supplies high-nickel battery packs to Tesla and Ford, among others.

China’s CATL, the world’s top cell supplier by a wide margin, comes in fourth with a combined 5.7 GWh of electric power in EVs sold year to date, a 25% jump over the same period last year.

SK On rounds out the top 5 which like fellow Korean battery maker LGES has underperformed the broader market with 8% growth to 5.4 GWh deployed.

Together the top 5 control 72% of the market in the Americas. Tesla does not make the cut at number six with its own 4680 cells that it has been manufacturing in Texas since 2022.
