Over the first nine months of 2025, 759.0 GWh of battery capacity was deployed onto roads globally in all newly sold passenger EVs combined, 26% more than the same period last year.

September was a breakout month worldwide with global battery capacity deployed hitting a new all-time high at 109.5 GWh after year-on-year growth of 27%.

September beat the previous record set in December last year by 11% and represented the first monthly total in the triple digits.

Asia-Pacific found itself in the unusual position of posting the slowest growth rate in GWh terms compared to other regions at 24% year on year for the month with 68.4 GWh deployed in newly sold EVs across the region. That compares to the previous record set in December 2024 of 63.9 GWh.

Records were set in Europe which grew by 26% compared to September 2024 to 21.7 GWh, beating the previous high set in March this year, and in the Americas which expanded by battery capacity deployment by 40% to hit 17.2 GWh.

The previous record month in the Americas was August as EV shoppers in the US pulled forward purchases before the expiry of retail incentives at the end of September.

Only the Middle East and Africa failed to set a new record, but September, the second best month in GWh terms for the region ever, did manage to grow by 49% year on year.

Boosted by fast-growing markets like Turkey, now the world’s eighth largest in GWh terms, the Middle East and Africa represented just over 2% of the global total in September.

Year to date expansion

Year to date, the Asia Pacific region still accounted for a full 62% of global battery capacity deployment, but after a surge in the early part of 2025, growth has moderated.

Over the first three quarters of this year, Asia Pacific’s rate of expansion (+30% to 473.3 GWh) has now fallen behind that of Europe, the Middle East and Africa (+33% to 169.4 GWh).

The EMEA region was responsible for more than four out of every five fresh kilowatt hours hitting global roads for the first time through September.

The share of battery capacity deployed for the Americas has shrunk to 15% of the global total as year-on-year growth rates have petered out to 16% for a total of 116.3 GWh so far in 2025, despite the robust electrification pace set during the third quarter.

Apart from Turkey (+137% to 9.6 GWh) among the top 10 countries year to date for EV battery capacity deployed, Germany and South Korea were the standout performers.

Germany, the world’s third largest market has expanded by 46% this year, reaching 32.6 GWh over the nine months, while the Asian nation, ranked sixth, after a few lacklustre years, has returned to strong growth, hitting 69% year on year for a total of 12.8 GWh.

The only top country to show a decline year over year is Canada which at 9.9 GWh for the nine months came in 10% below the total for the same period in 2024. France’s EV market is still growing but at just 3% to 15.9 GWh is underperforming other European nations. The UK, the fourth largest market this year in GWh terms, expanded by 37% through September, clocking in at 29.4 GWh.
