Top 5 Countries by Percentage Increase in EV Battery Capacity Deployed in 2018

Feb. 13, 2019

From Thailand to Argentina, EV markets are growing relentlessly

As we noted in a recent insight, in 2018, 72.3 GWh of passenger EV battery capacity was deployed globally, an increase of 81% over the year prior, according to a model-by-model build-up using Adamas Intelligence’s “EV Battery Capacity and Battery Metals Tracker”.

Diving deeper into the numbers – the top five countries by increase in passenger EV battery capacity deployed in 2018 were (in descending order) Thailand, Croatia, Costa Rica, Argentina and Egypt.

Hyundai, BMW and Nissan driving growth in new EV markets

In Thailand, 14.1 MWh of passenger EV battery capacity was deployed in 2018, up 1,435% over the year prior on the back of relatively strong EV sales from Hyundai and BYD, coupled with strong PHEV sales from BMW.

In Croatia, 6.0 MWh of passenger EV battery capacity was deployed in 2018, an increase of 852% over the year prior due to relatively strong BEV sales from Nissan plus modest BEV sales from Renault, Volkswagen, Hyundai and BMW.

In Costa Rica, 5.1 MWh of passenger EV battery capacity was deployed last year, up 624% over 2017 stemming from a boost in BEV and PHEV sales by Hyundai, Mitsubishi, BMW and Nissan.

In Argentina, 0.6 MWh of passenger EV battery capacity was deployed in 2018, an increase of 482% over 2017 due to a surge in sales of Toyota Prius HEVs.

And lastly, in Egypt, 0.1 MWh of passenger EV battery capacity was deployed in 2018, up 453% over 2017, on the back of increased BEV and HEV sales from BMW and Hyundai.
