S&P: Rare Earths Biggest Blind Spot in Battery Metals Supply Chain

Dec. 14, 2017

Battery Metals Supply Risks & Opportunities

In November, Adamas Intelligence founder and analyst, Ryan Castilloux, participated in a panel discussion on battery metals supply risks and opportunities at Mines and Money London 2017.

He emphasized that rare earth elements remain the biggest blind spot in the battery metals supply chain because without the permanent magnet motors they enable, EV batteries would need to be 15 to 20% larger (in terms of battery capacity) to deliver the same driving range (miles-per-charge), necessitating 15 to 20% more battery metals per average EV.
