Three Cell Suppliers Responsible for 77% of Global Battery Nickel Use in August 2019
Panasonic leads the pack but is losing market share to CATL, LG Chem, BYD and others
In August 2019, just three cell suppliers (Panasonic, CATL and LG Chem) were collectively responsible for deployment of over 75% of all passenger EV battery nickel used globally, according to Adamas Intelligence’s latest ‘EV Battery Nickel Monthly’ report.
As supplier of nickel-rich NCA cells to Tesla and NiMH cells to Toyota, Panasonic was responsible for 49% of all passenger EV battery nickel deployed globally in August 2019, down from 57% the same month the year prior after losing market share to CATL, LG Chem, BYD and others.
As supplier of NCM 523 cells, and more recently NCM 811 cells, to the likes of BJEV, GAC, Nio, Geely and others, CATL was responsible for 16% of all passenger EV battery nickel deployed globally in August 2019, up from 9% the same month the year prior on the back of a growing list of supply agreements with automakers worldwide.
Lastly, as a leading supplier of NCM 622 cells to the likes of Hyundai, Audi, Chevrolet, Renault, Jaguar and others, LG Chem was responsible for 12% of all passenger EV battery nickel deployed globally in August 2019, up from 8% in August 2018 due to a boost in sales of the Hyundai Kona, Audi e-Tron Quattro, Jaguar i-Pace, and other EVs powered by LG Chem cells.
In total, almost 4,400 tonnes of nickel (or nickel metal equivalent) were deployed in passenger EV batteries globally in August 2019, an increase of 23% over the same month the year prior.
