LG Chem Leads Peers by EV Battery Cobalt Deployed in 2019 H1
Just five cell suppliers responsible for over 75% of all cobalt deployed
As supplier of NCM cells to Hyundai-Kia, Renault, Audi, Jaguar, Chevrolet, and others, LG Chem deployed more cobalt in passenger EV batteries in 2019 H1 than all of its peers globally, commanding a 21% market share, ahead of CATL, Panasonic and BYD, according to a new report from Adamas Intelligence, titled ‘State of Charge: EVs, Batteries and Battery Materials‘.
CATL more than quadrupled its cobalt deployment year-over-year, doubling its share of global passenger EV battery cobalt consumption to 19% in 2019 H1 from a less imposing 8% in 2018 H1.
On the contrary, Panasonic’s cobalt deployment increased just 35% in 2019 H1 versus 2018 H1, leading its share of global battery cobalt consumption to drop to 15% from 21% the year prior.
Collectively, among the 40+ cell suppliers currently active in the global EV market, just five (LG Chem, CATL, Panasonic, BYD and Samsung SDI) were responsible for over 75% of the passenger EV battery market’s consumption in 2019 H1.
